Noel & Johnny talking guitars

Insight

As you may know, Johnny Marr is auctioning lots of his gear, including most of his iconic guitars: his early 1960 ES-355 (the one that inspired Noel to buy his #1), the Jetglo Rickenbacker 330 (which also appeared on the cover of Supersonic), and the red “Meat Is Murder” Les Paul (which Johnny played during his collaborations with Noel on a couple of High Flying Birds records). Mad!

Christie’s has just released a very enjoyable video of Johnny and Noel talking about some of the guitars before they go up for auction. Needless to say, it’s very cool, even if it doesn’t really add anything we didn’t already know, apart from another confirmation that Noel bought his ES-355 #1 in 1997. Check it out above if you’ve missed it: I could listen to Johnny and Noel talking for hours!

By the way, if you missed the in-depth article from last year about Johnny’s “Meat Is Murder” Les Paul, here’s the link.

There is one thing I couldn’t help noticing, though. Christie’s auction page for the Les Paul almost seems to have been built around that article: the exact same source material (which came from years of archiving and digging), the same links, the same quotes (just expanded), and even the same deductions. Must be a coincidence, of course, since there’s not a single mention of this website among the sources. The descriptions of the other guitars in the auction are nowhere near as detailed. Another coincidence, I suppose? Years of passionate research, completely free of charge. You’re welcome, Christie’s!

Same old story, really. Thanks to whoever else gives credit where it’s due.
